Inspiring the Next Generation of Women and Girls in Conservation Science
Conservation science is central to the work of the Toronto Zoo, driving meaningful progress for wildlife locally and around the world. Through research, collaboration, and education, the Zoo is addressing biodiversity loss while helping to protect species for generations to come.
Supporting the next generation of scientists

A core part of this work is supporting and mentoring the next generation of conservation leaders. Young scientists gain hands-on experience through research placements and learning opportunities that build the skills, confidence, and curiosity needed to pursue careers in science. Creating these pathways is especially important for women and girls, who remain underrepresented in many scientific fields.
In recognition of International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Toronto Zoo celebrates the essential role women and girls play in advancing conservation. By fostering inclusive learning environments and mentorship opportunities, the Zoo helps ensure that more young people can see themselves in science and contribute meaningfully to protecting wildlife.
Innovation that protects wildlife
Behind the scenes, Zoo scientists are advancing critical conservation research that supports species survival. This includes leadership in reproductive science, such as assisted reproduction techniques that contribute to recovery efforts for threatened wildlife.
The Zoo is also home to Canada’s largest and most diverse living cell cryobank, safeguarding genetic material from more than 100 species. This work provides an important conservation safety net and plays a vital role in protecting biodiversity now and into the future.
This research and innovation has gained international recognition and reflects the Zoo’s leadership in conservation science. Through collaboration with partners around the world, the Toronto Zoo continues to strengthen global efforts to protect wildlife and restore biodiversity.

How your support makes it possible

Donor support makes this impact possible. Transformative projects like the Community Conservation Centre will expand opportunities for hands-on learning, allowing visitors of all ages to engage directly with conservation science and see how research translates into real-world impact.
Together, supporters help fuel conservation innovation, empower women and girls in science, and strengthen the Toronto Zoo’s role as a global leader in conservation science.
