Red Panda Habitat Reimagined: Supporting a Future Here and in the Wild

For more than 50 years, your Toronto Zoo has been a gateway to wild spaces, connecting people to the land, animals, and one another. The new red panda habitat will help to continue that legacy.

Your Zoo has officially broken ground on the new habitat, and Poppy (female) and Kalden (male), the Zoo’s resident red pandas, have been temporarily relocated to the African Savanna while their new home is under construction.

Bamboo and Big Impact

Did you know your Toronto Zoo was the first zoo in North America to employ a full-time nutritionist? Today, the Nutrition Science team at your Zoo develops and prepares specialized feeding programs for nearly 300 different species – each one carefully designed to support each of their unique physiological, morphological, and behavioural needs.

That same level of care is shaping your Zoo’s new red panda habitat. The space will feature on-site bamboo storage and a purpose-built food preparation area, allowing our Wildlife Care team to prepare fresh, nutritious meals right where our red pandas live. This is very exciting as bamboo is an important part of a red panda’s diet!

Little Paws, Big Adventures

Behavioural enrichment is an essential part of the daily care every animal receives at your Toronto Zoo. This commitment was recognized last year when your Zoo received the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) first-ever Animal Welfare Award—reinforcing our role as a global leader in animal welfare.

Enrichment encourages animals to explore, play, and interact with their environment and with one another in ways that reflect their natural behaviours. These activities stimulate their minds while providing physical activity and mental engagement, helping to support overall health and well-being.

Your Zoo’s commitment to animal welfare is at the heart of the new habitat. Designed to preserve existing trees, feature enhanced climbing structures and a variety of enrichment elements. It will also include state-of-the-art, climate-controlled spaces to ensure the comfort and well-being of our red pandas year-round—while allowing guests to view and connect with them in every season.

Supporting Red Pandas from Day One

Red pandas are a delicate species—especially in their earliest days. Both in the wild and under human care, cub survival rates can be low, with only about 30% reaching their first birthday. That’s why creating a safe, supportive environment for cub rearing was a key priority in the design of the new habitat.

Every detail of the space has been thoughtfully planned to support red pandas at all stages of life. With flexible spaces to accommodate different family groups, this habitat will allow your Zoo to care for breeding pairs, growing cubs, and older individuals —helping support the future of this Endangered species.

A key feature of the new habitat is the addition of private maternity dens and custom-built nest boxes. These quiet, secluded spaces allow mothers to care for their young without disturbance from other pandas or Wildlife Care activity.

How Your Support Makes It Possible

Donor support makes this impact possible. Transformative projects like the new red panda habitat will expand opportunities to connect with wildlife, allowing guests of all ages to engage directly with conservation science.

And there’s more to come: a matching gift opportunity is on the horizon, giving every gift you make the potential to go twice as far in bringing this habitat to life.
