2024

Message from the Executive Director
and Board Chair

Thanks to your support, 2024 was a year of celebration and impact. From Toronto Zoo’s 50th birthday to the ground-breaking of our new front entrance - the Toronto Zoo Community Conservation Centre – to 61 turtles released in the Rouge Valley and countless others, none of this would be possible without the generous support of our community.

While we celebrate these milestones, we also reflect on loss of beloved animals, including Charles, the Western lowland gorilla. An ambassador for his species, Charles’ legacy will continue to educate and inspire, and your kind words and memories of him were a source of comfort as we honoured his long life.

We also welcomed new arrivals, like red panda and snow leopard cubs, and look forward to more stories of hope and connection.

For over five decades, the Toronto Zoo has been a leader in animal well-being and conservation science, exceeding accreditation standards and redefining what a zoo can be for the community, for nature, and for the next generation. And this is just the beginning.

As we look to the future, we are committed to scaling our impact. The Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy, fundraising partner to the Toronto Zoo, will lead a campaign to inspire investment in educational programming, animal well-being, and conservation science. With the country’s largest wildlife cryobank, the time to invest in this vital work is now.

Thank you for your continued support and for your commitment to a world where people, wildlife and wild spaces thrive.

Your Impact Work:

Whether you gave a little or gave a lot, your support made a world of difference in helping your Toronto Zoo to continue to preserve, protect, conserve and restore wildlife and wild spaces.

Supporting Animal Well-being:

At your Toronto Zoo, animal well-being is at the forefront of everything we do. The Toronto Zoo and the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy are dedicated to creating innovative habitats through thoughtful redevelopments and provide engaging enrichment prioritizing both physical and mental health for every animal.

Habitat modifications for the Sumatran tigers

In 2024, the Toronto Zoo’s two Sumatran tigers, Hari and Kemala were temporarily relocated to the Tiger house in Eurasia while construction began on the Indo-Malaya boardwalk and their habitats. Thanks to donor support, the Toronto Zoo has been working on building a new Sumatran Tiger Habitat that includes a multi-level climbing structure and a heated cave.

With only several hundred Sumatran tigers left in the wild, their species is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN red list. Tiger populations are threatened by habitat loss and degradation due to palm oil plantation expansion, poaching, tiger-human conflict, loss of prey and other factors.

Your Toronto Zoo continues to be the only Zoo in Canada that is home to Sumatran tigers.

Amur Tiger Habitat Expansion

Over the last few years, the Toronto Zoo has been constructing a new, expanded Amur Tiger Habitat that includes a multi-level climbing structure and heated water bowl. With support from donors, the habitat now offers more space and features to meet the complex needs of these big cats. With final touches completed in fall 2024, the expanded habitat provides the Amur tigers with greater opportunities to roam, climb, and engage with each other – and with Zoo guests.

In 2007, the conservation status of Amur tigers was downgraded from Critically Endangered to Endangered by the International Union for Conservation and Nature (IUCN). Fewer than 500 Amur tigers remain in the wild, slowly recovering from a low of just 20-30 animals in the 1930s. Their greatest threats continue to be illegal hunting and habitat loss.

As part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Amur Tiger Species Survival Plan® (SSP), your Toronto Zoo has raised Amur tiger cubs since 1974. The Amur Tiger SSP program ensures the ongoing genetic health of the Amur tiger population in human care, safeguarding genetic diversity that may have been lost in the wild during the 20th century.

June Matching Gift Campaign

In May, your Toronto Zoo welcomed two new snow leopard cubs and in June, our generous community of donors celebrated the new additions. Through a matching gift campaign, you helped us raise $10,000 to purchase new enrichment items for the new snow leopard family.

The snow leopard cubs represent an important step in the protection of the species. The Toronto Zoo continues to participate in the Snow Leopard Species Survival Plan® (SSP), a cooperative breeding program amongst AZA accredited North American facilities. Through the SSP, we maintain a sustainable population of snow leopards in human care to preserve their genetic diversity and allow them to serve as ambassadors for their wild counterparts.

Animal Enrichment

Throughout the year, your Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy raises money to support ongoing enrichment needs at your Toronto Zoo. From onsite fundraising initiatives like the Donation at Till program to more targeted campaigns such as the annual Enrichment Giving Tree and the 2024 Giving Tuesday Campaign, approximately $100,000 was raised for new onsite enrichment items for the animals at your Toronto Zoo.

Animal enrichment is very important and is something every animal at your Toronto Zoo receives daily. Items like balls, kongs, and many other items enhance our animals’ environments by providing them with opportunities to stimulate their natural behaviours.

Advancing Conservation Science:

With new and innovative cutting-edge science and strategic conservation efforts, the Toronto Zoo is safeguarding the future of our planet’s ecosystems and ensuring their resilience for generations to come.

Charles’ Legacy

With the passing of your Toronto Zoo’s beloved 52-year-old Western lowland silverback gorilla, Charles, in October, we were deeply moved by the incredible outpouring of support from our community. Thanks to the generosity of donors, approximately $25,000 was raised to support our Wilding Endangered Species Preservation Fund and over $50,000 was raised for Toronto Zoo’s veterinary care program which provided such wonderful care to Charles throughout his long life.

Charles played a vital role in your Toronto Zoo’s mission to connect people, animals and conservation science to fight extinction. His legacy includes meaningful contributions to the future of his species through the Western Lowland Gorilla Species Survival Plan® (SSP) – a collaborative conservation effort among accredited AZA zoos to ensure the survival of the Western lowland gorilla.

Charles may have left us, but his spirit and his legacy lives on in the lives he touched and in the hearts of the millions of guests who visited the Zoo since it opened in 1974.

Wilding Endangered Species Preservation Fund

Established in 2022, the Toronto Zoo Wilding Endangered Species Preservation Fund, was created to support global initiatives to protect species in the wild through boots on the ground partnerships. In collaboration with these partners, your Toronto Zoo’s support now extends to more than 5 different diverse geographic regions around the world safeguarding species in their natural habitats. In 2024, the Toronto Zoo partnered with the International Rhino Foundation to help rhinos thrive in their natural habitats. As the fundraising partner to the Toronto Zoo, the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy has committed to fundraising $250,000 in support of in situ rhino conservation efforts.

White rhinos in the wild are listed as Near Threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. There are fewer than 16,000 left in the wild, with numbers currently declining due to habitat loss and the continued increase in poaching for their horn for the illegal wildlife trade. The Toronto Zoo is part of the White Rhinoceros Species Survival Plan® (SSP), which aims to establish and maintain healthy, genetically diverse populations, and overall conservation efforts to save this incredible species. One of the Toronto Zoo's mandates is to educate visitors on current conservation issues and help preserve the incredible biodiversity on the planet.

Conservation Breeding and Reintroduction Programs

In 2024, your Toronto Zoo was proud to be home to four active conservation breeding and reintroduction programs, each dedicated to reestablishing vulnerable wildlife populations. The Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy, is commitment to supporting species not only in professional care but also in the wild – helping threatened wildlife not only survive but thrive.

Blanding’s turtle: Turtle species are in a decline worldwide, and Ontario is no exception. Seven of the provinces’ eight native species are now listed as species at risk. The Toronto Zoo raises and reintroduces juvenile Blanding’s turtles into the Rouge River Watershed. In 2024, 74 Blanding’s turtles were released increasing the program’s total released to almost 750 since inception.

Canada’s Wildlife Cryobank

Your Toronto Zoo is home to Canada's largest and most diverse living cell biobank, preserving the genetic heritage of more than 50 endangered Canadian species — a vital tool for rebuilding healthy, resilient, and diverse animal populations like the caribou and the wood bison.

Under the leadership of Dr. Gabriela Mastromonaco, Chief Science Officer, your Toronto Zoo's cryobank plays a key role in preserving genetic diversity and supporting wildlife conservation efforts within Canada and worldwide.

Her groundbreaking work - including the birth of wood bison calves from sperm frozen for 35 years - is helping safeguard the future of many species. Additionally, Toronto Zoo researchers recently published a literature analysis surrounding wildlife biobanking, revealing key trends and insights that can inform future biobank development for wildlife conservation.

Connecting people and nature:

Through community and education-based programming, the Toronto Zoo and the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy are inspiring a deeper connection to nature and fostering a sense of shared responsibility for the world around us.

$1,000,000 Milestone

Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of our incredible supporters over the last 10 years, the Move Your Paws and Oasis ZooRun events have cumulatively raised over $1,000,000 in support of wildlife conservation at your Toronto Zoo.

These events continue to serve as vital fundraisers, generating resources and awareness that directly impacts the well-being of animals both at your Toronto Zoo and in the wild. Since their inceptions, Move Your Paws and Oasis ZooRun have contributed to the development and modifications of animal habitats, expanding opportunities for guests to engage with nature in meaningful ways.

Funds raised through these events have contributed to the development of animal habitats here at your zoo, supported core conservation efforts such as the reintroduction efforts of native Canadian species including the Vancouver Island marmots, black-footed ferrets and Blanding’s turtles, and helped polar bear populations through conservation, education and research initiatives.

Proceeds from the 2024 Oasis ZooRun were split with half going to White Rhino conservation projects in the wild and half supporting the rhinos who call your Toronto Zoo home, helping to safeguard one of the planets most endangered species.

Your continued support makes this work possible. Together, we are creating lasting change for wildlife and empowering the next generation of conservation stewards.

50th Anniversary Auction

In celebration of your Toronto Zoo’s 50th Birthday, the Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy held their annual silent auction raising more than $29,000 in support of the Toronto Zoo’s vital conservation efforts.

The funds from fundraising initiatives like the annual silent auction directly support the Toronto Zoo’s ongoing efforts to combat extinction through conservation breeding and species reintroduction programs, helping to protect vulnerable wildlife populations and ensure their survival for generations to come.

Community Conservation Centre

In the spring of 2024, your Toronto Zoo officially broke ground on a transformative project – the brand new, state-of-the-art Community Conservation Centre. Positioned just outside the admission gates, this dynamic new front entrance will elevate the guest experience, provide hands-on learning spaces to inspire and equip the next generation to take action for conservation.

Take a closer look at the project and see how the concept designs are helping to transform your Toronto Zoo.

Celebrating our donors

2024 saw incredible generosity from almost 600 valuable supporters. These contributions took many different forms (individuals, corporations, foundations, grants and bequests) and were directed towards key initiatives that will make an impact for generations to come both here at your Toronto Zoo and in the wild.

This past year we found new ways to show appreciation to our donors through a series of thoughtfully curated donor engagement activities. These opportunities provided meaningful opportunities for donors to witness the direct impact of their generosity.

We brought back the Adopt an Animal Parent’s Day, an event designed to celebrate our donors' contributions and deepen their connection to our mission. Guests were invited to spend the day exploring the zoo, engaging with staff, and seeing their donations at work—bringing conservation to life in real and tangible ways.

These in-person experiences continue to play a vital role in fostering transparency, trust, and a shared sense of purpose as we work together to protect wildlife and inspire future generations.

"As a long-time member of the Toronto Zoo, becoming a monthly donor was an easy decision to make. I'm always thrilled to see my dollars put to work in ways that support the daily wellness and conservation of the animals we love so dearly."
